Excellent Slovenian and foreign electro-artists and bands are responsible for a good atmosphere, crazy fun and pleasant mingling long into the night. Both stages are opened until the morning hours.  
Ruff Roga Last night two DJs from Maribor were testing the endurance of the Lent visitors at the Mladina stage. Bloody Tadi and Ruff Roga from the Total Fusion collective are both known for their first-class techniques and an outstanding music selection. The once inseparable duo joined its powers after a long time, since Tadi is continuing his successful music career in Dubai. "It is great to return to Maribor, to Lent, and spin records for the local audience. When Žan (the producer of the Mladina stage) invited me to collaborate, he suggested that I ask Roga as well and we were both immediately prepared to do so. I returned to groovy electro-music, but his virtue is still his striking dance-electro. We complement each other very well and I think that we created a very good set,” said Tadi.  The visitors apparently agreed since they couldn't get enough – even after a five-hour performance. Previous night the spectacular performance of Zircus celebrating its 10th anniversary was shaking the Satchmo stage. The strong electronic flow and the creative, dynamic visuals of Tomi Gangl, who is also responsible for the visuals for Laibach, captivated the packed club. 
Zircus Tonight the Mladina stage is offering an energetic blues-rock mix with a trio of renowned musicians from Maribor (Sašo Sandić and two members of the reggae band Siti Hlapci Matej Horvat Mato and Samo Pečar) who will be performing as Sašo Sandić trio. After them, Prismojeni Profesorji Bluesa will be taking over the stage, promising a two-hour concert experience, and “if necessary, an even longer one”; as it should, the wacky 16 days will end with a special after-Lent performance, a rock set created by our irreplaceable member, sound technician Marko Jakopanec.

Mladina stage in the Jazz Club Satchmo  The last dance at the Minoriti venue tonight will be in the hands of the pioneer of the UK Jazz Dance scene – Paul Murphy. It is said that Paul was the one who started spinning »uptempo« jazz in the British clubs, and even Gilles Peterson agrees on this. His unpredictable, ever magical and cosmical sets are captivating fans all over the world, who won’t let him leave the dance floor until the last song fades away.

The Incredible Box, Vertigo, Kitchen, Oskar & Strudel show, Parade, The Coloured Ones and many others, through which the old and young generations of Lent visitors were given lessons for life.  The festival visitors were enthused by the outstandingly positive personality and refined facial expressions featured in the show Dan-Le Man by the young Estonian who spends a lot of his time in Australia. His mouth juggling, falling, balancing, making up stories and problems, courtships and desperate moments, together with his interactions with the audience were putting smiles on the faces of young and old. A four-legged friend was also enjoying the relaxed show and instead of an applause honoured the performer with some howling.  Yesterday we had the chance to see the only Polish street theatre, an extraordinarily thought through and creative play Kukuryku. The whole performance is played with puppets, the author not being an active part of the play. Her personality is reflected through the puppets made by Ola Muchin especially for this occasion. But this is not a classical puppet theatre, because the main character - old, dusty magician Osvaldo Drevno is attached to the actress, who remains invisible during the whole play. His chickens and other helpers are helping the magician with his humorous, unpredictable tricks. All the characters have their own personality, and the alter-ego of the author joins them in the end. Magician Osvaldo may have lost his charm, but he didn't lose his passion for magic and life. The performance of the Russian theatre group Tatr Minyatur titled Titanik was very special, too. Professional actors wanted to introduce the art of acting to the audience in a very unofficial way. Three actors were presenting different short stories which started in antique times, but still continue to go on due to the disposition of the human nature. The main themes of the performance are cascading stories about love, hatred, jealousy, death and joy that all together create the whole story of humanity. “This is a performance delivering a clear message through every short story. The message is that love and beauty will save the world,” the leader of the group from St. Petersburg, Sergei, commented after the show.  A diverse street theatre program for young and old is waiting for us in the next days. Legendary reggae band Inner Circle from Jamaica, that at some point collaborated with almost every renowned reggae artist in the world, will occupy the Central stage tonight at 9:30 p.m.  Bursting with playful energy they just arrived in Europe from the Pacific and will have their first concert on Lent! “People are the source of this energy and memories which we can only get by stepping in touch with local audiences,” said drummer Lancelot Hall ignoring his tiredness. “It’s our second time in Slovenia, we feel some amazing vibrations here because you know how to party! We are here to have fun! What will you do?!” laughed Hall. »You have to participate, dance, sing, everything!” Harvey je complemented him. The band that set the foundations of reggae on a global scale says that they stayed true to their roots despite the centuries of being on stage and performing. “The production of reggae music in Jamaica and in the world has changed and commercialized. But I think that the whole music genre, not only our band, stayed true to the original message,” Hall was contemplating about the band’s heritage and the status quo. »Reggae is aiming for progress and is always announcing changes which can be felt in the music that was and still is the driving force of social progress,” philosophised »Touter« Harvey. “This is why you should not give up! You have to create, but know how to listen,” was his last advice aimed at younger performers.  The Grammy award-winning Bad boys of reggae band is welcoming you tonight at the Central stage at 9:30 p.m. with their hits like Bad boys, Games people play, Sweat, Rock with you and many others! Troker, and with his electronic inputs he supported, changed, accelerated or led the dance rhythm of the band. They were soon joined by a giant bass and trumpet player whose sounds were incorporated into the DJ’s sound mixer, who then added some echoes, length and loops and packed everything up into the background music of the next song.  As if this wasn’t enough, other members of the cast started to come on stage. The pianist with his 4 keyboards and computer got every inch as insane as the drummer. The centre of the band was the extremely energetic saxophonist - Arturo Santillanes. His response to the question how on earth should one even start to describe their style was: “Look, we play some jazz, we like to add some rock, hip-hop, funk, soul and put some psychedelic mariachi from the traditional environment into it. We are an instrumental band at heart, and Lopez represents a new starting point for new music.” Their outstandingly varied musical performance was supported by electronic visuals that were appearing according to the music and songs on a big screen behind the band.  It is hard to say who was more enthused about the concert – the performers or the audience. The musically exceptional and energetic performance gained a standing ovation and the band hardly managed to leave the stage at all. “This is our Maribor premiere and we hope to see you again next year! Viva Maribor!« Santillanes sincerely said during the concert in the exciting atmosphere of Jazz Lent. It’s Trocker’s second European tour and they are sorry that they have to leave so soon because Maribor really charmed them with its Festival.  The electronic jazz evenings continue tonight with Maria João Ogre! The outstanding Portuguese vocalist with her piercing voice turns her performances into visual and audio delights accompanied by keyboards, piano and drums. This year the Lent Festival found itself in an unenviable position and for a long time, it was not even clear if the Festival will take place or not. What does Lent mean for Maribor today? On the one hand, the Festival is still a big opportunity for Maribor. On the other hand, it is also a big experience for the city. There is a lot of social knowledge gathered at this festival that could be used to the city's own advantage. I think we are not fully aware of the fact that many places envy this potential. Such a festival cannot be build by just putting together some bricks – special social skills are needed for that.  What does the Festival mean to you personally? For me, the Lent is a search for various surpluses and after each edition my soul is filled by them. For example, the opening night with Carmina Slovenica was an extraordinary experience. It might seem just a choir and we take it for granted, but it’s a choir of worldwide success that can get the audience going without looking at it. Twice during the concert I had the feeling that the next step for them would be to float in the air. This, of course, is not possible, but on the other hand it means that we’ve experienced something really special in the musical context.  How to maintain such a varied, excellent program?  It is precisely this that represents an additional problem for the city. An excellent corpus is hard to support, especially because the regulations at the time dictate that the municipality has to take care of it on its own. On the one hand, big city municipalities are not like smaller municipalities with a couple of thousand inhabitants and a small budget and to use for themselves. It is self-evident, that the whole Podravje region and broader region can enjoy the Festival every day. On the other hand, it is not self-evident that the whole region should provide financial support for such a festival. There are many performances of global dimensions that spread from this city. We are facing multi-layered challenges.  Where to search for solutions?  On the one hand, there are infrastructural solutions that are relatively simple, we just have to change our way of thinking. Instead of yearly investing into solutions that are then removed after the festival, we have to start investing a part of this money into infrastructure that would stay a part of the city. A good example is the new auditorium of the Puppet theatre which totally fits the Festival. After the Festival, when the people relax, we should start thinking about and preparing a budget for next year or the next few years. Narodni dom said that they have some good solutions for the Central stage ready - the space could be used for other purposes during the year. That’s seems like a reasonable and good solution.  What’s the future of the Festival like?  The future is in making minor improvements that might not be noticed by the public. The public might notice a new stage or venue, but in order for it to function, small developments are necessary. The Festival started in the bay of the Drava river and now we have the Central stage here and this year it is positioned a bit differently than last year, also the grandstands are smaller, but all this changes offer a better view on the stage. These are all small, unnoticeable details, but further improvements are necessary.  How do you respond to Festival critics?  I find it interesting, that the most critical people are those who don’t even visit the Festival. They still think visiting the Festival means taking a city stroll among the čevapčiči stands, but at the same time they miss the (culinary) diverse offer and experience the Festival is offering. The same applies to the events. This year, the Festival is celebrating its 22nd edition. Sport Lent in the morning and try out different challenges from Blazing, basketball, football and volleyball, to Jet ski, cycling marathons, shooting or tomorrow’s skydiving water jumps. The lost energy can be replaced by the culinary delights of Sladolent, and you can recharge your batteries in the lively city park. In the anticipation of tonight’s closing event of Folkart on the Central stage, yesterday the 16th youth folklore festival in Art Camp was closing its doors with performances by the groups from Serbia and Hungary. Their folk music and dance was then followed by renowned Slovenian musician and composer Miha Guštin with guests, mostly known for the immortal songs he composed for Big Foot Mama, Polona Kasal or himself alone. This time he was joined by young Kaja Skrbinšek, whom he wished a successful start at the music academy in Amsterdam. The sunny day ended in the completely packed Judgement tower, where the audience was enthusiastic about the fusion of Balkan rhythms performed by Kapobanda. The members, all experienced former members of Terrafolk, came to the stage very relaxed - so relaxed that they even forgot about their set list. »Could someone there at the stairs quickly run up and get our set list? You’ll find it on a big white sheet. You know how handy a cheat sheet is!« accordionist Marko Hatlak joked around. They did not really follow the set list later on. While improvising their way through the entertaining music, the changes of melody were also announcing the changes of instruments. »Ok, now if someone could find the frula, we’ll buy them three drinks! I am serious!” Hatlak entertained the audience and cast members while they were searching for the instrument. At the same time Macedonian rappers Shutka Roma Rap were ruling over the Večer stage and after them the legendary Orlek took over. »We play everywhere. I bet we hold the record among Slovenian bands for the number of funeral songs,« Vlado Poredoš provoked the audience in his style. At the packed Central stage, Đorđe Balašević was doing the same: entertaining the audience with roguish stories from his personal, social and political life. »I am getting more and more convinced, that the EU is a good thing. Since Slovenia and Croatia joined, former premiers are put in prison, and that’s why I am a big supporter of Serbia joining as well.« His first concert at Lent was 15 years ago, and since then he experienced many musical successes and also collected several personal stories about Lent. Đorđe brought along many shirts from those events and changed them during his concert giving the words a deeper meaning. The roguish evening continued at the Mladina stage with the high-frequency hard metal event with Burn Fuse and Bosnian Mother's chainsaw. The later took the place to pieces with a consistent hammering on drums, bass and guitars, their topless singer left his soul on stage and invited the audience to their next concerts with his energetic performance. After this extremely vigorous concert many a people wanted to “drop the bass line” to lower frequencies, that’s why they went to the Minoriti stage, where you can enjoy the after-parties every night. Yesterday DJs Keyser & Shuriken from Hungary and Tom Wieland from Austria were pampering our ears until dawn. Friday started early and ended at dawn of the next day. The concert started off with three members who were later joined by the other five and together they created a musical euphoria. Since having the audience close to the stage was not enough for the band, and since they were feeling a special energy in „summery“ Maribor, they got off the stage with their instruments and mingled with the audience at the end. They finished with a lively jam and made their concert one of the most unforgettable events of this year’s festival. Very explosive – as promised. Once more we can look forward to a night of excellent music and Balkan humour. »The most important thing for him is the authentic connection he establishes with the audience and he was very happy to be back in Maribor after such a long time. He wants to maintain this connection and upgrade it, that’s why he is returning to Lent,« he summed up Rade’s reasons to come back to the floating stage on the Drava river.   The festival visitors got a second change and will spend another, longer evening with one of the most renowned actors and the author of six excellent albums, together with the band and pianist. Argentina, Japan, Guam, Portugal, Turkey, Serbia and, of course, Slovenia danced across the Central stage at the Drava river, impressing the audience with their colourful dresses. Even the rain slowed down, after the first dancers warmed up the stage. The young Argentinian musicians and dancers from the province Santiago del Estero, a Mediterranean region in the north-western part of Argentina, showcased their dance traditions and their luxurious national costumes. Every bit as luxurious were the lovely ladies from the Serbian folklore group AKUD Ivo Lola Ribar, who presented the Serbian dance tradition to the audience. With far less clothes, but that more exotic dance moves the representatives of the Chamorro people from Guam enthused us, while the Portuguese persuaded us with traditional dances from the Algarve region. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the evening was the performance of the Hiroshima dance group SANYO Daiko Dan with their traditional drums drowning out almost every other sound on the Lent embankment.   After the successful opening night the whole folklore parade was walking the traditional walk across our town bringing good mood, colourful clothes and dancing feet to the streets of Maribor and putting smiles on the face of every passer-by. Folkart is not limited to the stage - it can and will sneak into zour every day and that’s a fact.
