ORLEK ● SHUTKA ROMA RAP (MKD)

ORLEK

Vlado Poredoš (vocals, guitar), Jure Tori (accordion, keyboards), Bojan Bergant (guitar), Matej Fele (guitar), Mitja Tori (bass), Nino Mureškič (percussion), Kristijan Adamlje (saxophone), Ečo Matko (trombone), Jan Adamek (trumpet)

Orlek’s home is Zagorje ob Savi, the heart of Slovenia’s mining country. This has had a strong influence on Orlek’s music – which could be described as a sort of “folk punk polka rock” – and especially on their lyrics, which often deal with social issues. Although the issues themselves might be very serious and even sad, Orlek never lose their optimistic edge and always deliver their message with a strong humorous connotation. The band always establishes a direct contact with the audience, spreading their optimism and enthusiasm to the crowd.

SHUTKA ROMA RAP (MKD)

Al-Alion, Error, Only 1, Nu100 and Mali & Taki (MCs), Mendo (sax, clarinet), Ajnur (trumpet), Ice (violin), Ismet (bass), Meko (drums)

Shutka Roma Rap developed from the 2009 Macedonian Roma Rap compilation project, supported and released in 2010 by the FOSM/Soros foundation.

Since the early nineties youth in Roma urban communities around Europe have been creating a new, non-conformist identity by adapting the subculture of hip hop to local environment. Due to the quickly made parallels between Roma mahalas and American ghettos their interest in rap and its most popular godfathers quickly grew. It is rumoured fifty per cent of the audience at the Skopje James Brown concert were his Roma fans. For at least a decade and half hip hop has been listened to and performed in the Skopje Roma municipality of Šuto orizari - Šutka, steadily gaining popularity among the local youth, who meet at the Roma “rap” studios (their songs are based on free internet hip hop loops and samples), at occasional Roma TV hip hop competitions and at hip hop and r&b parties in the local clubs and invade YouTube with their homemade video spots. Rebellion and provocation are their salt and pepper. Subdued anger provides the heat.
