ĐORĐE BALAŠEVIĆ (SRB)

For over 20 years, Đorđe Balašević’s songs have touched millions of people across the region of former Yugoslavia. Balašević, sometimes described as the Yugoslav Bob Dylan, is popular not only for expressing his independent political views, but also because many of his lyrics celebrate a simpler, gentler past and touch on everyday themes. During the war in Yugoslavia, combatants from all sides involved – Bosnians, Croats, Serbs and others – wept when listening to the “Man with the moon in his eyes”, perhaps the most powerful of Balašević’s war-time songs. As far back as 1992 he recorded the powerful track “Sloboda ne” (“Freedom, no”) and in 2000 he achieved a major success with the album “Devedesete” (“The Nineties”). He became perhaps the most important and iconic musician of the post-Yugoslavian era because he speaks his mind and does not mince words. His uncompromising attitude and acerbic wit won him popularity all over former Yugoslavia and it’s no wonder that he was the first Serbian musician to perform in Slovenia, Bosnia and Croatia after the war.
